The Most Popular .BR Top Level Domains in Brazil

Brazil, a nation of over 214 million in South America, uses the top-level domain .br. It’s among the top 10 country code top-level domains (CCTLDs) in the world. Many entities, including government agencies, universities, and businesses, use the .br domain extension. The domain is managed by the Brazilian Network Information Center (BNIC).

This post explores the most popular .br top-level domains, including its use by categories, states, and cities.

How Many .BR Domains Have Been Registered?

As of July 2023, over 5 million .br domains have been registered (5,179,107). Of these, 16,276 are internationalized domain names in applications (IDNA). Internationalized domains use characters and symbols other than digits and unaccented Latin alphabets.

Additionally, over 1.5 million .br domains implement Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) that enhance the security of the DNS protocol through stricter authentication.

In the last year alone, more than a million .br domains have been registered.

What Is the Most Popular Extension for .BR Domains?

To use the .br extension, most entities have to use another extension before the .br suffix. The most popular extension using the .br domain is .com.br. Of all the .br domain registrations, .com.br domains make up nearly 93%, with over 4.8 million records as of July 2023.

This is likely because the .com extension is the most popular all over the world and it’s easier to remember. It’s typically used by businesses and organizations based in Brazil.

What Are Some of the Categories of .BR Domains?

The second level .br domain categories include government/legal entities, cities, universities, natural persons, restricted, and professionals. The remaining extensions can be categorized as generic.

The generic category accounts for most .br domain registrations with popular extensions such as .com.br. Over 95% of .br registered extensions are generic.

Legal entities are the second most common category, making up over 2% of the total registration with over 111,714 registrations. In this category, .org.br is the most used extension, with over 52,000 registrations.

Liberal professionals are the third category spot, with 1.77% of registrations (91,842). Of these, .adv.br is the most commonly used extension (over 46,000 domains registered).

How Many Universities Use .BR Domain?

Over 4,600 .br domain extensions are used by universities and higher education institutes in the country. These domains make up a mere 0.09% of the total registrations.

The most popular suffix for universities in Brazil is .edu.br, with 3,476 registrations. The remaining universities use only the .br extension, reserved for public universities only.

What Are the Most Popular .BR City Domains?

Cities in Brazils have their own unique extensions, typically featuring the city name or its abbreviation with the .br suffix. These are not official city domain extensions, so anyone can use them as long as they meet the requirements for .br domain.

The most popular Brazilian city domain is .rio.br, which represents Rio de Janeiro, a metropolis with over 6.7 million inhabitants as of 2020. There are over 2,600 domains with a .rio.br extension. In second place, it’s the extension .sampa.br, representing Sao Paulo (also called Sampa), with over 1,000 registered domain names. And in third place, it’s .brb.br, with over 950 registrations. It’s linked to Brasilia, the capital of Brazil.

Which .BR Domains Require DNSSEC?

Certain second-level domains with the extension .br must utilize DNSSEC to ensure a high standard of security. Such extensions are typically used by government branches or financial institutes.

The .br domains that must have DNSSEC include .b.br, .jus.br, .def.br, .leg.br, .mp.br, and .tc.br. The extension .b.br is intended for banks and financial institutions. Similarly, .jus.br is intended for the judiciary of the country.

In this particular category, .b.br is the most commonly used extension, with 254 extensions.
